MEHRTASH MOHIT
Mehrtash is a Toronto-based writer-director whose films explore immigration, identity, and cultural memory with wit, tenderness, and precision. Born in Tehran and based in Toronto since 2012, he tells stories that move between Farsi and English, between the places we leave and the places we become. His work spans narrative fiction, documentary, and branded film.
He is an alumnus of the Canadian Film Centre’s Directors’ Lab and was selected as a Netflix–Banff Diversity of Voices director. His films have travelled the international festival circuit, led by the acclaimed short Finding Shelter, alongside The Shave (CFC), Retributive Minds, More Vivid than Sculpture, and Fariba. His experimental documentary about an Afghan mother’s search for her lost daughter screened at the Images Festival.Backed by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts Council, and Ontario Creates, Mehrtash has secured more than $240,000 in arts funding for his work.
He is currently developing Arrivals, an eight-part digital anthology about immigrant life in Toronto, supported by Ontario Creates. Also on his slate are the feature Articles of Punishment, developed with CFC involvement and drawing distributor interest, and A Simple Solution, a dark comedy-thriller supported by the Canada Council now in pre-production.
Mehrtash brings the same craft to commercial work, directing spec spots for Zarsa and More Studio, and he knows productions from the ground up through years on major Toronto commercial sets for brands like HubSpot, Journeys, and Lactaid. In 2026 he joined the team at the Toronto International Film Festival, working behind the scenes on the technical delivery of the festival and market screening slate.
A dedicated educator, he teaches Visual Storytelling at Toronto Film School and has mentored more than twenty emerging filmmakers, many of whom have gone on to win arts council grants of their own. He holds an MFA in Film Production from York University.
